Cybersecurity 101 courses, what we will learn if we are to apply in this course? Also, what are the following basic rules of cybersecurity that you will be able to apply?
Intro: Cybersecurity 101 Course
The Cybersecurity 101 Course will teach you the basics of cybersecurity and how to apply these basics to your life. Here are the basic rules to follow:
- Be aware of scams
- Create strong passwords
- Always install security updates
- Use a VPN for Internet browsing
- Use two-factor authentication for all accounts
- Avoid public Wi-Fi
- Be vigilant about security software updates
- Do not open suspicious links or attachments (even from friends)
- Be wary of scams
- Avoid public Wi-Fi hotspots
We will have a brief broad understanding of the following basic rules mentioned above.
Basic Rules: Awareness And Scams
It is important to be aware of scams. A scam is a fraudulent activity that is designed to take advantage of the victim.
The most common scams include phishing, malware, and ransomware. Cybercriminals target those who are unaware. So it is important to be aware of potential scams.
Basic Rules: Strong Passwords
Strong passwords are essential because they are difficult to crack. So the stronger your password, the less likely you are to fall prey to a cybercriminal.
A strong password has a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. To create a strong password, use at least 8 characters and a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
One way to create a strong password is to combine the first letters of each word in a sentence or phrase. For example, “I will never forget my first programming class” into “Iwfnfmfpc” as your new password.
Also, avoid using obvious passwords. Such as birthdays or family names. Why? Cybercriminals often attempt to hack passwords with these obvious words in them.
Basic Rules: Installing Security Updates
Cybersecurity experts recommend that you install security updates. So as soon as they become available usually within days.
Cybercriminals have been known to exploit flaws in older versions of software after the security update has been publicly released. Therefore you must install security updates immediately after they become available for your operating system, programs, etc.
Basic Rules: VPNs And Internet Browsing
If you connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots for internet browsing or online shopping use an encrypted Virtual Private Network VPN. So this encrypted connection will protect all internet activity from prying eyes on public Wi-Fi hotspots.
Also, the virtual private network will help mask your IP address making it difficult for hackers to steal your personal information.
Basic Rules: Two Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security. As that requires two separate pieces of information to gain access into an account.
Usually, a username and password are required. But with two-factor authentication, an additional piece of information.
Such as entering a code received via an automated phone call or text message. Essentially, two-factor authentication makes it much more difficult for cybercriminals to gain access. So to an account if the correct login credentials are not entered correctly.
Basic Rules: Avoiding Public Wi-Fi Hotspots
If you connect public Wi-Fi hotspots for internet browsing or online shopping use an encrypted Virtual Private Network. This encrypted connection will protect all internet activity from prying eyes on public Wi-Fi hotspots.
Also, the virtual private network will help mask your IP address making it difficult for hackers to steal your personal information.
